The winner of the 2018 Order of Merit is

"Bazz Bdzola"

Bazz Bdzola

The winner of the 2018 Order of Merit trophy was won by the UGAGB Secretary Bazz Bdzola.

This is the second occasion that Bazz has won the prestigious OOM trophy, the first a decade ago when he was approaching a significant milestone and history has repeated itself with another milestone only a few weeks away. Perhaps a pattern is developing, we'll see in 2028.

Consistency is the key to winning the OOM as the trophy is awarded to member with the highest score taken from the best 5 rounds of the season and Bazz was the only member who managed to put in 8 qualifying cards therefore able to ignore his lowest 3 scores, the highest of those being 29, which is an average score for most members. As they say "You've got to be in it to win it" and here lies proof of that old adage.

Bazz started the season playing off a handicap of 24, which under the UGAGB handicapping rules he played off for the first two events until he won the first of his 2 monthly events in May at Leeds Golf Centre, the UGAGB Spring Cup, and his handicap was cut to 22 after scoring a season high 39 points.

Over the next 4 events, his handicap steadily crept up to 25 and coming into the season's final event at Ruddington Grange in October, he was lying 1 point behind the 3 joint OOM leaders on 166 points, along with two members on 161, so any 1 from 6 could realistically go on to win the OOM. However, nerves certainly did not get the better of him and he equalled his season high score of 39 to claim not only the UGAGB Open but more importantly, the 2018 OOM trophy by a margin of 5 points.

Bazz has UGAGB blood running through his veins and has been a member for almost as long as the society has been in existence, winning his first event in the millennium and many more since and has been part of the organising committee over many years holding the posts of President and currently Secretary.

He is altruistic and puts in many hours of hard work behind the scenes to ensure on days when events are held as well as organising the annual weekends away, everything runs smoothly and effortlessly, which members take for granted, but that is all down to Bazz, and being the modest person he is, he would not like us to thank him for that, but rest assured Bazz, every member of the UGAGB does.

Bazz has deservedly proved to be a worthy winner of the 2018 OOM and congratulations from all the members of UGAGB.
