The winner of the 2017 Order of Merit is

"Stefan Borys"

Stefan Borys

The winner of the 2017 Order of Merit trophy was won by the youngest UGAGB member for the 3rd year out of the last 4, Stefan Borys.

Stefan became a member of UGAGB in 2013 playing off 15 and in his first season his handicap fluctuated between 15 and 16, finishing on 16, however, the writing was on the wall that in the years to come, he would be a major contender for prizes, and that prediction has proved to be correct.

In 2014, starting the season playing off 16 he won the Presidents Trophy and after a consistent season, finished on 13 and winning the OOM trophy for the first time.

Starting the 2015 season playing off 13, he retained the Pesidents Trophy he won the previous year in the seasons opening event and added the UGAGB Open Trophy to his collection which he won at the final event and with it, retaining the OOM trophy. Consistency was again the key to Stefan's success coming down to a single figure handicap, finishing the season on 6.

In 2016, playing off 6 proved to be a test and although he did not win an event, he managed to keep his handicap to single figures finishing the season on 8.

The 2017 season started slowly by his own standards and after the first 4 events, his handicap had gone back to double figures but the season's 5th event at his home club of Mickleover and on familiar territory, proved a pivotal turning point and his fortunes for the remainder of the season changed. Although he did not win the Bendzak Memeorial Trophy on the day, he did finish first in division 1 with a score of 38 points and with it, his handicap was cut to 8. The following event, was the annual UGAGB weekend of golf held at Kenwick Park, and despite the event not qualifying towards the OOM, competitive golf is still played with the UGAGB Weekend Trophy presented to the winner over 2 rounds, which Stefan duly won by a margin of 8 points.

In the season's penultimate event, once again, although he did not win the UGAGB Championship, he did finish top of division 1 and saw his handicap cut to 6 going into the season's final event at Rushcliffe, the UGAGB Open where he was lying joint second in the OOM standings with 2 other members on 167, 8 points behind the leader. In order to claim the OOM, there had to be a 9 point swing and Stefan unfazed by what was required on the day, attacked the course and finished with a score of 38, thereby not only claiming the UGAGB Open Trophy, his 2nd win of the season, but in the process, scoring sufficient points to secure the OOM, by a margin of 1 shot.

The good news for other UGAGB members is that Stefan will begin the 2018 season playing off 4, however, if he maintains the consistency he has shown in the second half of the 2017 season, then he will certainly be amongst the contenders at every event next year, and hopefully, get his handicap even lower.

Stefan has definitely proved to be a worthy winner of the 2017 OOM.

Well done Stefan and congratulations from all the members of UGAGB.
